Job Overview:

Reporting to the Director Strategic Growth and Development, the Literacy for Living Coordinator/Facilitator will develop, coordinate, and deliver literacy programming for Terra participants. The Literacy for Living program is grounded in the belief that literacy is essential for navigating everyday living in a way that enhances the quality of life.

Programming is designed to address the needs of teen parents with children 0-6 years, supporting overall personal development, strengthening communication skills, and nurturing healthy parent and child relationships. The learner will be provided with opportunities to develop learning skills and habits that build confidence in seeing themselves as a self-directed independent learner.

Terra offers Literacy for Living programming through a multi-session course, supporting a continuum of learning, or as a single learning activity paired with other events or programs offered by Terra. The main goal of the program is to promote the value and benefits of literacy for the whole family and encourage families to become lifelong learners.

This position requires working closely with Program Managers and Supervisors, organizing various aspects of the programs, coordinating groups and events, and performing the administrative duties related to the program.

Job Conditions:

This position is a 6 month position working 30 hours/work.  The ability to work flexible hours is required to meet the needs of the program and participants.  The position is based out of the main office located at 10320-146 Street.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and vision in designing and implementing literacy focused programming for young families.
  • Complete applications and reporting requirements 
  • In collaboration with Terra Programs, develop a schedule for Literacy for Living programming
  • In collaboration with Program Managers and Supervisors determine relevant capacity building activities for program staff to facilitate literacy programming and embed literacy activities in other agency programs and events
  • Follow the developed curriculum that is concept based, make improvements based on need and ensure effective delivery of lesson plans
  • Participate in continuous adult and family literacy learning strategies
  • Data entry of program registration, attendance, and session anecdotal records
  • Plan and prepare program sessions including the administration of program evaluation tools
  • Purchase of program materials following allotted budget
  • Maintain positive relationships with co-workers, participants, and delivery partners
  • Develop and implement strategies to attract and increase program enrollment and retention
  • Assist in any indirect activity that helps to promote the mission of Literacy for Living.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Degree in Early Learning and Care, Human Ecology, Child and Youth Care, Social Work or related Human Service Program
  • Experience developing and facilitating literacy programming
  • Completed Introduction to Adult Foundational Learning Training
  • Completed CALP Essentials for Family Literacy Programs Training

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to adapt communication and working style to best suit audience when interacting with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Works independently, and effectively while under pressure and with minimal supervision
  • Successfully juggles multiple projects with tight deadlines
  • Must also be able to problem solve, be flexible, have critical thinking skills
  • Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and personnel management skills

Other requirements:

  • A valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle
  • Clear Criminal Record Check and Child Intervention Check that are dated within 90 Days of the start date
