Edmonton John Howard Society (EJHS) is a CARF accredited, community based not for profit crime prevention agency that has been operating in Edmonton since 1949. Our mission is “through our programs and services we work to prevent crime and to help people affected by crime”.

Journey Home is a new program for 6 adult males that have been given a Not Criminally Responsible Disposition (NCR). Staff are onsite, 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. As a Teacher you will provide flexible and individualized education and guidance in a safe, stable environment to help residents gradually re-adjust to the community after living in a secure hospital setting.

A Teacher will work 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday. The rate for this position is $45/per hour.


  • Open to flexible and alternative methods of delivering the decided curriculum
  • Be able to adapt to the changing group dynamic and provide instruction within a group or one on one by utilizing independent/guided study
  • Being able to translate curriculum content and objectives into meaningful learning activities
  • Using gathered information about clients learning needs and progress to improve instruction
  • Contribute to the management of high risk, high needs client base by being member of multidisciplinary team
  • Ensure services are being delivered in accordance with Agency Policies and Procedures
  • Participate in Unit Meetings, Agency Meetings, Case Conferences


  • Bachelor of Education and valid Alberta Education Teaching Certificate
  • Background in Special Education
  • Background in adult education and literacy
  • Clear Criminal Record Check, and valid First Aid/CPR
  • Flexibility to work an on-call rotation
  • Strong communication and pro-social relationship building skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a mental health population
