Winter Emergency Response Weekend Cook

Job Purpose:

The Weekend Cook will be responsible for all aspects of meal preparation, clean-up, and general health and safety requirements of the kitchen on the weekends from November 1-April 30.

Mandatory training will be provided prior to the Winter Emergency program start date of November 1, 2017. Please be prepared to attend this training from Oct 16-19 & 27, if you are the successful candidate.


  • Provide lunch on the weekends for community members.
  • Take full responsibility for the set up and effective operation of the kitchen on the weekends.
  • Maintain a high standard of consumer service.
  • Assist in managing volunteers in the kitchen, including identifying and monitoring their training needs and taking an active role in their development.
  • Be aware and adhere to licensing, health and safety guidelines and applicable federal or provincial legislations.
  • Work with the Drop-In staff and the Development Manager for special events and volunteer group food requirements.
  • Monitor and report all maintenance issues.
  • Ensure storage areas are clean and organized, including dry storage, coolers and freezers.
  • Ensure the work of the kitchen and volunteers is in line with the mandate, mission and spirit of Boyle Street.
  • Other duties as required.

Experience and Knowledge:

  • Minimum 3 years’ of food service experience.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of poverty related issues, trends and services, particularly in Edmonton, is essential.
  • Knowledge and experience of Indigenous culture is desirable.
