This position is a 6 month temporary maternity leave cover position with a possibility of extension.

Job Purpose:

To provide emotional support, information, referrals, and advocacy to assist former students of the Indian Residential School (IRS) System and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and their immediate family members, and/or support people. This position also requires presentation planning and delivering education on various aspects of the IRS system, ambiguous loss, cultural diversity and understanding urban Indigenous peoples who struggle with poverty, addictions, loss and other results of historical and intergenerational trauma.


  • Accompany former students to any remaining IRS System proceedings, dispute resolutions and court hearings in order to provide emotional support
  • Support Indian Residential School and Intergenerational Survivors (community members) in the Boyle Street Community Services Drop-In, providing emotional support, information, and/or referrals.
  • Support family members of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
  • Provide supported referrals to Professional Counselling and to Cultural Supports.
  • Provide supported referrals to appropriate community resources and/or other relevant resources such as lawyers or health practitioners
  • Deliver crisis intervention as needed, including follow-up until the crisis situation has stabilized.
  • Assess client’s issues and needs; assists and supports clients to develop a healing plan and take positive steps to achieve their goals; makes referrals and advocates on behalf of clients as appropriate; coordinates with other Boyle Street program staff to best support the client.
  • Work with Cultural Support Worker in order to provide a variety of opportunities for healing, such as workshops, Healing Circles, and attendance at other ceremonies.
  • Network with other Resolution Health Support Workers (RHSW) regionally and nationally in order to develop best practices for working with former students and their families and sharing that knowledge with staff of BSCS
  • Network with other RHSWs regionally and nationally in order to develop best practices of Missing and murdered Indigenous and sharing that knowledge with staff of BSCS.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive written documentation, according to Boyle Street’s systems and standards, as well as Health Canada expectations, regarding all client interaction.



  • Completion of either:
  • Bachelor of Social Work (or a related degree) and 1 year related experience;
  • Social Work (or related) Diploma and 2 years related experience; or
  • Applicants with years of experience working in the inner city and relevant knowledge of Indigenous history, culture and practices within a Harm reduction Strategy will be considered.

Skills, Abilities and Attitudes:

  • Display proven ability to work in a respectful, non-biased and client-centered manner
  • Possess excellent networking and communication skills
  • Experienced to work in a stressful environment and deal with difficult, sometimes abusive, clients
  • Must possess the ability to respond quickly to, and effectively deescalate difficult, potentially volatile situations.
  • Must possess the physical ability to occasionally stand, or sit for long periods of time, and walk long distances over a variety of terrains.
  • Able to travel within Edmonton, but also to other surrounding communities when required.
  • Willingness to occasionally work long days, evenings and weekends.


  • Knowledge of the Indian Residential School System and the effects this system has had on former students and their families.
  • Knowledge of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and the process of the National Inquiry.
  • Understanding of trauma, ambiguous loss and various healing methods.
  • Knowledge of SFI, AISH, Mental Health, Child Welfare and Justice procedures, guidelines and practices, as well as an understanding of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including presentation planning, development, and delivery.
  • Criminal Record and Child Intervention Checks (results will be reviewed on a case by case basis)
