PROGRAM INFORMATION:

The Urban Counselling Network (UCN), located in Boyle Street Community Services’ Mental Health Department provides much needed free counselling services by qualified master-level clinical counsellors to low income, homeless, and marginalized populations in the inner city. The Clinical Counsellor is responsible for providing therapeutic counselling within Boyle Street’s Mental Health Department, along with in-home and off-site counselling sessions (as requested) to inner-city community member who have mental illness or mental health issues.

This position works 22.5 hours per week working 3 days/week from 8:30AM-5PM.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Counselling individuals and couples; facilitation of psycho-educational groups (as needed) for people who live with multiple barriers (poverty, mental illness, addictions, homelessness, etc.).
  • Working collaboratively with other mental health staff to ensure client care coverage.
  • Assist in meeting the psychosocial needs of clients through collaboration and consultation with other members of the multi-disciplinary team and community resources.
  • Delivery and follow-up of Crisis Intervention as needed.
  • Working cooperatively as part of a team (planning of services, team meetings, facilitating information sessions); community liaison for counselling program.
  • Advocacy as needed (e.g. writing letters for clients who engaged in counselling for Victims of Crime Financial Benefits Program).
  • Client file maintenance as per ethical guidelines of professional registering body.
  • Providing support, if required, to clients in the community or in their homes.

Qualifications:

  • Must have completed a Master’s degree in one of the following: Counselling, Psychology, or Social Work (licensed to perform psychosocial interventions).
  • Active registration in good standing with any of the following: Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, College of Alberta Psychologists (Registered or Provisionally Registered individuals will be considered), Alberta College of Social Workers.
  • Education/experience in trauma recovery and counselling individuals with addictions is required.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience counselling individuals living with the effects of trauma and experience working with marginalized, poor, homeless populations.
  • Knowledge and experience in working with Indigenous clients; knowledge of the impact of Indian Residential Schools on the Indigenous population and greater Canadian culture.
  • Ability to work proactively, effectively, and independently in a complex changing environment.
  • Suicide Intervention training is required.
  • Current criminal and child and youth intervention record checks.

Salary: $25.37 – $29.85 per hour plus excellent benefit package upon completion of probation period
